Los Angeles and an Early Start
DiCaprio was born in Los Angeles on November 11, 1974, to Irmelin Indenbirken, a German-born legal secretary, and George DiCaprio, an underground comix artist and distributor. His parents separated when he was an infant and he grew up in an unglamorous part of the city.
He worked in television commercials and sitcoms before Michael Caton-Jones’s This Boy’s Life in 1993 opposite Robert De Niro. The same year, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape brought an Academy Award nomination at nineteen.
