Reading, and an Early Start
Winslet was born in Reading, Berkshire, on October 5, 1975, into a family of working actors without much money. She trained at the Redroofs Theatre School and was performing professionally as a teenager.
Her film debut was Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures in 1994, a startling first performance. The following year she was nominated for an Academy Award for Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, at twenty.
Titanic and What She Did With It
James Cameron’s Titanic in 1997 made her one of the most famous people on earth and brought a second Oscar nomination. It also brought a level of scrutiny — much of it about her body — that she has discussed with considerable anger in the years since.
Her response was to avoid the studio system almost entirely for the following decade, taking Hideous Kinky, Quills, Iris and Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2004 rather than the franchise offers that would have been available.
The Oscar
Further nominations followed for Iris, Eternal Sunshine and Little Children. In 2008 she appeared in two films: Sam Mendes’s Revolutionary Road, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, and Stephen Daldry’s The Reader.
She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Reader at the 2009 ceremony, on her sixth nomination. A seventh followed for Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs in 2015, which also won her a BAFTA.
Television: Mildred Pierce and Mare of Easttown
Winslet has been unusually successful on television. She won an Emmy for HBO’s Mildred Pierce in 2011, and another for Mare of Easttown in 2021 — a performance as a Pennsylvania detective that became a genuine cultural event and was widely praised for its refusal to glamourise.
She followed it with HBO’s The Regime in 2024. She also joined James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, appearing in The Way of Water in 2022.
Lee and Producing
In 2024 she starred in and produced Lee, a biographical film about the photographer and war correspondent Lee Miller. Winslet spent years developing the project, and it marked a decisive shift toward controlling her own material.
Directing Goodbye June
A Family Project
Winslet’s directorial debut, Goodbye June, was made for Netflix and released on December 24, 2025, following limited theatrical screenings earlier that month.
The screenplay was written by her son, Joe Anders. Set in present-day England, it follows a fractured group of adult siblings gathering around their dying mother.
The Cast
Winslet directed, produced and starred, alongside Helen Mirren as the matriarch, with Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough, Johnny Flynn and Timothy Spall. Reviews were warm, with critics singling out the ensemble.
Assembling that cast for a first feature is its own statement about the standing she holds among British actors.
Family
Winslet has three children: Mia, from her marriage to Jim Threapleton; Joe, from her marriage to the director Sam Mendes; and Bear, with her husband Edward Abel Smith, whom she married in 2012.
She has been outspoken for years about body image and the treatment of women in the industry, and has consistently refused digital retouching in her work.
The Pattern
