Joaquin Phoenix has spent thirty years building a filmography almost entirely out of difficult men in difficult films, and then won an Oscar for a comic book movie. In 2025 he made his second film with Ari Aster, a pandemic-set Western in which he plays a small-town sheriff losing his grip. It was, predictably, divisive.

An Unusual Childhood
Phoenix was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on October 28, 1974. His parents were at the time members of the religious group the Children of God, and the family travelled through South America before leaving the group and returning to the United States, changing their surname to Phoenix.
All five siblings performed as children. His older brother River became a major star before dying in 1993 at twenty-three — an event that shaped the whole family and one Phoenix has almost never discussed publicly.
Building the Career
Early Work
Gus Van Sant’s To Die For in 1995 marked his adult arrival. Ridley Scott’s Gladiator in 2000, as the emperor Commodus, brought his first Academy Award nomination.
Walk the Line
He played Johnny Cash in Walk the Line in 2005, singing himself, winning a Golden Globe and receiving a Best Actor nomination.
The Difficult Decade
Phoenix then spent years on films that made no commercial sense at all and produced some of his best work: Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master in 2012, which brought a third nomination; Spike Jonze’s Her in 2013; Anderson’s Inherent Vice; and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here in 2017, which won him Best Actor at Cannes.
He also staged the extended fake retirement documented in I’m Still Here, an elaborate performance piece that most of the industry took at face value at the time.
Joker
Todd Phillips’s Joker in 2019 was an enormous commercial success and won Phoenix the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 2020 ceremony. He used the acceptance speech to talk about animal agriculture and the treatment of animals — the cause he has organised his public life around.
The 2024 sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, was received considerably less warmly.
Eddington
The Second Aster Film
Phoenix first worked with Ari Aster on the dark comedy Beau Is Afraid in 2023. They reunited for Eddington, which premiered at Cannes on May 16, 2025, and was released in the United States on July 18.
The Film
Set in May 2020 in a fictional New Mexico town, it follows a standoff between Phoenix’s sheriff, Joe Cross, and Pedro Pascal’s mayor, complicated by the mayor’s history with Cross’s wife, played by Emma Stone. Austin Butler also appears.
Aster’s subject is the early pandemic and the conspiracy culture that grew out of it. Reviews called it brazenly provocative and split sharply on whether it worked. Phoenix has said he is drawn to Aster’s observations and to the way he writes.
Activism and Family
Phoenix has been vegan since childhood and is one of the most prominent animal rights advocates in the industry, narrating documentaries and using awards platforms consistently for the cause.
He is in a long-term relationship with the actress Rooney Mara, whom he met on Her and worked with on Mary Magdalene. They have two children, the elder named River after his brother.
The Pattern
Phoenix does not take safe roles. Even inside a billion-dollar franchise he chose the version that made audiences uncomfortable. Eddington is entirely consistent with a thirty-year record of picking the argument rather than the consensus.
