A Difficult Start
Cruise was born in Syracuse, New York, on July 3, 1962, and moved constantly as a child — by his own count through more than a dozen schools, including a period in Canada. He has dyslexia, which went largely unaddressed during his education, and he briefly entered a seminary before deciding on acting.
He was cast in Endless Love and Taps in 1981, and in Risky Business in 1983. Top Gun in 1986 made him the biggest young star in the world.

What Cruise did next is the part of his career that gets under-discussed. He deliberately sought out established filmmakers: Martin Scorsese for The Color of Money in 1986, Barry Levinson for Rain Man in 1988, Oliver Stone for Born on the Fourth of July in 1989.
The Stone film brought a Golden Globe win and his first Academy Award nomination. Two more followed — for Cameron Crowe’s Jerry Maguire in 1996, and for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia in 1999, in which he gave what many critics still consider his best performance.
He also worked with Stanley Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut, released in 1999, and with Steven Spielberg on Minority Report and War of the Worlds.
Mission: Impossible
The franchise began in 1996 under Brian De Palma and ran for nearly thirty years, with Cruise as producer as well as star. Its distinguishing feature became his insistence on performing his own stunt work, a practice that escalated with each instalment and eventually became the marketing itself.

Top Gun: Maverick

The Honorary Oscar
On November 16, 2025, at the Academy’s 16th Governors Awards, Cruise received an Honorary Award. It was presented by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who was by then directing him in his next film.
In accepting it, Cruise said that making films is not what he does, it is who he is. The award closed a long-running oddity: one of the most commercially significant actors in film history, with three acting nominations and no wins.

Cruise is stepping away from very large-budget action for the first time in more than a decade. His next project is an untitled film directed by Iñárritu for Warner Bros., scheduled for release on October 2, 2026.
Reporting has described it as centring on the most powerful man in the world, who inadvertently triggers a global catastrophe and then races to establish himself as humanity’s saviour, with a strong streak of dark comedy. Both the genre and the register would be a significant departure, and the October release date positions it as an awards play.
Iñárritu has said publicly that the performance will surprise people.

Cruise has been married three times: to Mimi Rogers, to Nicole Kidman, with whom he adopted two children, and to Katie Holmes, with whom he has a daughter, Suri.
His membership of the Church of Scientology has been a persistent subject of public attention and criticism since the mid-2000s.
The Working Method
