London, and an Accidental Start
Pattinson was born in London on May 13, 1986. He came to acting through a local amateur dramatic society rather than training, and his first significant screen role was Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005.
Twilight and the Escape From It
Edward Cullen
He was cast as Edward Cullen in Twilight in 2008. Across five films it made him one of the most photographed men on earth and attached his name permanently to a franchise he spent years being visibly ambivalent about in interviews.
The Auteur Strategy
His response was the most successful deliberate reinvention of any actor of his generation. He worked with David Cronenberg on Cosmopolis and Maps to the Stars, James Gray on The Lost City of Z, the Safdie brothers on Good Time in 2017, Claire Denis on High Life, and Robert Eggers on The Lighthouse in 2019.
By the end of that run the Twilight question had simply stopped being asked. He also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in 2020.
The Batman
Matt Reeves cast him as Bruce Wayne in The Batman, released in 2022 — a detective-driven, deliberately unglamorous take on the character that was both a critical and commercial success.
The Batman Part II is scheduled to begin shooting in spring 2026, following the expansion of the world through Colin Farrell’s The Penguin.
2025: Mickey 17 and Die My Love
Bong Joon Ho
He led Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, playing an expendable worker on a colony mission who is repeatedly cloned after each death — a role requiring him to play multiple versions of the same man.
Lynne Ramsay
He then appeared opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love, which premiered at Cannes in May 2025 and received a nine-minute standing ovation. It is a bleak, close film about a relationship coming apart under postpartum psychosis.
2026 and Beyond
His 2026 slate is unusually dense. The Drama, opposite Zendaya, arrived in April. The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, follows in July, with Pattinson as Antinous, the leader of Penelope’s suitors.
Primetime, a thriller drawing on the To Catch a Predator phenomenon, is scheduled for September 2026.
He is also reported to be joining Dune: Part Three as Scytale, the Tleilaxu Face Dancer who is the principal antagonist of Dune Messiah. Pattinson has said he would have been devastated to give up any of the 2026 projects — the scheduling was, by all accounts, extremely tight.
Personal Life
Pattinson is in a long-term relationship with the model and musician Suki Waterhouse. They have a daughter, born in 2024, and both keep their family life closely guarded.

Pattinson’s method is simple and rare: alternate. One studio film funds three that would otherwise struggle to exist. It is why he can be inside Batman, Dune and a Nolan epic while still being the actor Lynne Ramsay wanted.
