Maryland and an Unusual Academic Route
Judith Ellen Kent was born in 1956 in Bethesda, Maryland, into a Jewish family. Her father, Robert Kent, ran Kent Companies, an insurance and real estate business in Rockville.
Her education is more varied than the standard finance-executive path. She took her bachelor’s degree at Tulane University, then a master’s in organizational psychology at the Catholic University of America, before going to Harvard Business School for an MBA.
Organizational psychology is not a common step toward Wall Street, and it shows in the direction her career later took.
Meeting Jamie Dimon
Kent met Jamie Dimon at Harvard Business School. They married in 1983, in a ceremony conducted by a rabbi, and have three daughters.
The marriage has spanned the entirety of Dimon’s career — his years under Sandy Weill, his firing from Citigroup in 1998, the move to Chicago to run Bank One, and the return to New York to lead JPMorgan Chase. Shearson and American Express
Kent began at the financial services firm Shearson as a management trainee. After American Express acquired the company, she rose to vice president of marketing.
