Florida, a Band, and an Accidental Career
Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963, and grew up mostly in Miramar, Florida. He left school at sixteen to play guitar in a band called The Kids, and moved to Los Angeles intending to pursue music rather than acting.
Acting arrived through a personal introduction — Nicolas Cage suggested he try it — and he was cast in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. Fox’s 21 Jump Street then made him a teen idol, a status he actively disliked and spent the following decade dismantling.
The Tim Burton Years and the Character Actor Strategy
Choosing Strange Parts
He took John Waters’s Cry-Baby in 1990 and, the same year, Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. That began a collaboration spanning eight films across three decades — Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland.
Between them he built a run of serious dramatic credits: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993, Mike Newell’s Donnie Brasco in 1997 and Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in 1998.
Jack Sparrow
Disney reportedly resisted his approach to Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. The performance earned an Academy Award nomination and turned a theme park ride into one of the highest-grossing franchises in history.
Two more Oscar nominations followed, for Finding Neverland in 2004 and Sweeney Todd in 2007, the latter also winning him a Golden Globe.
The Legal Years
The London Case
In 2020 Depp brought a libel claim in London against News Group Newspapers over an article in The Sun. The High Court ruled against him, finding the newspaper had established the substance of its claims. He was subsequently asked to step away from the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
The Virginia Trial
In 2022 he brought a defamation action against Amber Heard in Fairfax County, Virginia, over an opinion piece she had written. The trial was televised and became one of the most-watched legal proceedings of the streaming era.
The jury found largely in Depp’s favour on his claims and also found for Heard on one of her counterclaims. The two sides reached a settlement later that year.

The Return
Jeanne du Barry
His first post-trial film was the French production Jeanne du Barry, in which he played Louis XV. It opened the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 — a booking that was itself the subject of considerable argument.
Directing Modì
He then directed Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, a biopic of the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani starring Riccardo Scamarcio, with Al Pacino in a supporting role. It premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival in September 2024 and secured North American distribution for a limited theatrical run beginning November 7, 2025.
It is only his second film as a director, following The Brave in 1997.
Day Drinker
His return to a major English-language studio production is Day Drinker, directed by Marc Webb for Lionsgate, with Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline. Depp plays a mysterious passenger who becomes entangled with a private yacht’s bartender and a criminal figure. Lionsgate has scheduled it for March 26, 2027.
Music and Family
Depp continues to perform with Hollywood Vampires, the band he formed with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, and has recorded with Jeff Beck.
He has two children with the French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis, his partner for fourteen years: Lily-Rose Depp, now an established actress in her own right, and Jack. He was married to Amber Heard from 2015 to 2017.
Where He Stands
Depp’s route back has run through European cinema and directing rather than through Hollywood’s front door, and the studios have moved cautiously. Day Drinker is the test of whether that changes.
